The Viola Studio

Viola Lessons in Lakewood, Ohio.

Unlock your potential and become the best musician you can be.

Welcome to The Viola Studio!

At the Viola Studio, we prioritize the technique and tone of every student with an approach guided by looking at the body as a whole instead of pin pointing one aspect of your playing.

Through the instruction, you are guided along each step with detailed instructions, practice logs, and technique lists that focus on tone, set up, and technique. We believe that each student makes the most progress through performance and sharing their hard work with others and encourage participation in student recitals, local concerto competitions, Master Classes, and auditioning for local Orchestras and Summer Festivals.

You will be guided along every step as you become not only a great violist, but a well-rounded musician.

No experience is necessary to begin and all levels are welcome from ages 13 to adult.

For younger students ages 11 and below, please visit Lakewood Suzuki Strings.

Why Choose The Viola Studio

  • Organized approach

Lessons have detailed instructions with annual technique lists for different levels so every skill and technique is developed.

This helps each student to not have to guess what they are going to work on next, but allows them to keep track of their progress and be guided every step of the way.

  • Daily Practice

Practice guides & detailed instructions are given at each lesson to know what to work on and what your goals are.

Learning the art of practicing effectively and efficiently is a skill that each student is taught so they learn how to manage their practice time wisely.

Students are expected to practice daily.

  • Karen Tuttle Technique

Karen Tuttle was a revolutionary violist that discovered a different way of teaching and playing the viola. This technique approach is centered on teaching the whole person and the whole body rather than having tunnel vision on a certain problem. It’s a whole minded approach of working with the body and the breath to play the viola.

  • Performance Opportunities

Mastering an instrument comes through not only daily practice but through the art of performing. In the Viola Studio, students have opportunities to perform in recitals, masterclasses, auditions, and competitions.

Local students receive a list of opportunities they can apply to and are encouraged to put themselves out there.

  • "... From the very first lesson, I felt myself in the most competent of hands. Micaela is a brilliant musician and a born teacher, who as a highly educated musician and experienced teacher can teach music on all levels. Although I’m an adult and were not studying to be a professional violist, she treated me like a professional student – not giving me more, than I could handle, but on the other hand aiming as high as possible and seeing a potential in me, I myself didn’t know was there. Micaela has a great sense of humor, and the lessons were always held in a good mood – that said, she was never wasting my time (or hers) or my money – it was always serios work all the way through. I loved that and always left the lessons with the biggest of motivation. To any problem I might have struggled with on the instrument, she had a solution, an exercise which instantly made things better. As said: Micaela is the born teacher – and notice: we were having online lessons via Zoom, as I live in Europe. Amazing that such quality teaching can take place via a computer, which does not say much about computers but a lot about the teaching skills of Micaela Murphy. Most importantly: For Micaela MUSIC is always in the front row. Mastering a string instrument might easily and understandably be concentrated about technique, and that of course is important and a necessary part of the study. But for Micala Murphy you never play ANYTHING without having the music in mind: never play a tone without aiming for a beautiful sound, never play two tones without making af musical phrase – the consciousness of what you want with your playing, where the music is going, where you want it to go, what you want to express or what the music wants you to express – a constant dialogue – is never out of sight, no matter the technical problems you at the same time might be working on. The music is – you might say of course, but I have had enough teachers to know otherwise – the reason why we play an instrument or sing and why it makes sense for us to spent time trying to improve. I can’t highly enough recommend studying with Micaela Murphy – can’t imagine a better teacher."

  • “My son has been learning the violin with Micaela for about 3 years now and is thriving. Micaela is a wonderful teacher. She is very talented, encouraging and supportive. I love that she is also very particular about homework and practice. My son loves her classes. She also provides many opportunities for performing through the […] recitals. Best decision we ever made!” —Hamsa, Parent
